The house sounds I’ve been consistently drawn to over the last few years seem to revolve around siblings Dubbyman and Above Smoke’s Deep Explorer imprint and the small coterie of labels they release on and share some kind of kindred spirit with: Yore, Mineundo, Fear of Flying to name a few. While the legacy of Detroit looms large in their productions they seem to straddle the twin poles of home listening and dancefloor utility with ease. Of course there isn’t a chance in hell of playing this kind of stuff out in Cape Town given the current penchant for wailing saxophones and “spiritual” vocals – aka “soulful house” – and lowest common denominator minimal and electro.

Ok, enough whining. Here’s a mix of some of my favourite deep house moments of the last few years.

All these tracks are available on Beatport (I checked!) so there’s no excuse for not buying them.

Update:

This mix is now featured on the fantastic Deeper Vibes site. Check it out for some quality underground mixes.

Been listening to a lot of disco nuggets recently, as well as some 80′s synth stuff, largely as a result of recently being asked to play at Peroxide, a monthly synth-based night at Fiction in Cape Town. Had a great time there and have included a few tracks I played that night in my latest mix. I’m not going to waffle on about the tracks, just say that there’s some disco, some synth stuff, a few Todd Terje edits and some housier gear from Chez Damier to end it off. Had a lot of fun doing this one and I hope you enjoy it. Tracklist after the image.

Site of the Week – World of Merix

The Yellow Llama (Mark to his mom) alerted me to this fantastic use of the jQuery javascript library by World of Merix, a polish web design firm.

World of Merix Screenshot

Innovative uses of jQuery and other scripting libraries, along with HTML5, should hasten the demise of Flash which will be good news for everybody. Spend your afternoon over at World of Merix. You won’t be disappointed.

Not the Site of the Week -Incredible Connection

Oh dear. If there one thing you can really rely on – with far greater certainty than those old chestnuts death and taxes – it’s that a large South African organisation will release a disastrous web site on an almost weekly basis. This week’s “winner” is Incredible Connection. I’m not going to write some long usability post here, just take a look at the screenshot and wonder why they would launch an e-commerce site that you can’t shop at! If you’re feeling particularly masochistic you can visit Incredible Connection, and there’s a pretty detailed dissection (and a LOT of inane commenting) at We Are Not Freelancers.

Incredibly bad

555 KUBIK_extended version

“How it would be, if a house was dreaming”

The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

“The Camera Is Not a Machine Gun”

Design Observer (despite the terrible re-design, still the best design writing on the web) has a piece on David Goldblatt’s latest exhibition, “Intersections Intersected: The Photography of David Goldblatt,” on view at New York’s New Museum through October 11. A number of Goldblatt’s recent photographs come out of a shoot with Cape Town production company Free Range Films for the television series ‘Masupatsela’.

Thanks for nothing

Finally, I’d like to thank Woolworths for forcing a browser choice on me and everybody who uses Firefox.

If they can’t even get it together to update their copyright information what hope for cross-browser functionality?

Adam says:

“This is an edited version of my stop frame animated art work titled Perpetuum. It explores ideas related to: monotony, repetitiveness, tedium and the relentless nature of attempts to keep up with the pass of contemporary life. It was shot with a digital stills camera over a period of 3 months, mounted on my kitchen wall, and aimed at the sink area. There are approximately 5000 frames, running at 25 frames per second, about 6 minutes of footage is looped, and plays uninterrupted for ever and ever and ever.”

All rights to the work are reserved and belong to Adam Letch, any unauthorized usage is prohibited.
